Why is Everybody Always Trying to take Manhattan?

And where are they gonna put it?

Poor Manhattan. Ever notice how often people are trying to take it? First it was the Garrick Gaieties (music by Richard Rodgers) in the 1920s (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Garrick_Gaieties). Then in the Muppets had their little midtown caper back in 1984 (see rogerebert.com/reviews/the-muppets-take-manhattan-1984). Three short years after that, Leonard Cohen disgraced his God-given deep timbre to threaten both Manhattan and Berlin (listen at youtube.com/watch?v=JTTC_fD598A).

In one of those Friday the 13th horror flicks, Jason takes Manhattan. The Angels take it later in an episode of Doctor Who. Then, just recently, an expanding cosmetics empire announced his plans to take the whole bloody borough over (see modernluxury.com/manhattan/features/bluemercurys-barry-beck-unveils-plans-manhattan-takeover).

Just leave Manhattan alone. I think it’s fine right where it is.
